Car parks, parks and bike lanes on the Golden Mile to reduce pollution

Arona will implement its low emission zone (ZBE) in the surroundings of the Golden Mile of Playa de The Americas, from Avenida Antonio Domínguez to the sea front. It will reduce pollution and noise, improve accessibility and be a commitment to sustainable mobility. The estimated investment is 500,000 euros and is part of the Arona Ilusiona Plan, for the transformation of the tourism model of Los Cristianos and Las Américas.

The low emission zones are one of the main measures of the Climate Change and Energy Transition Law, which obliges cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants and which affects 149 cities that add up to more than half of the Spanish population.

To promote sustainable mobility in accessing the ZBE, an interchange will be created that will have a large underground public car park, located in the vicinity of the Antonio Domínguez Stadium, between 7 Islas street and the square located in front of the Church of Nuestra Señora de Guadeloupe. There will also be public transport stops and bicycle rentals, as well as charging points for electric vehicles and bicycles.

The Arona Ilusiona Plan includes a cycle lane network that requires speed limits on those streets to 30 kilometers per hour. With a planned investment of 350,000 euros, the circuit will start from the area known as El Rincón, in the area of Los Tarajales (Los Cristianos) and will continue along Juan Carlos I, Amsterdam, Los Playeros, Suecia and La Habana avenues as far as Avenida Las Américas, where there will be a fork: one of the cycle lanes will continue along Rafael Puig Lluvina avenue, Las Verónicas and Arquitecto Gómez Cuesta avenue, and the other along Luis Díaz de Lozada street and Arquitecto Gómez Cuesta avenue, ending both routes in the new exchanger.

Urban park

One of the projects of the Arona Ilusiona Plan is the creation of a green lung in Las Américas, with the regeneration of the urban park of the ring formed by Antonio Domínguez, Las Américas and La Habana avenues and Luis Díaz de Lozada street.

This transformation will be completed with smart tourist and commercial signage, which will cover the new low-emission zone and the tourist hub that forms Los Cristianos-Las Américas. It will prioritize pedestrian itineraries and will show, through panels with Wi-Fi technology, the distances, information on the place, the main attractions of the municipality and the closest services.

Arona will create pedestrian routes with shady areas on the main promenade. For the mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, the Arona Ilusiona Plan “perfectly defines the future we want for our municipality.” In addition to the benefits of the ZBE, the aronero councilor claims the management of his government and states that “we are committed to a modern Arona, committed to the environment and to the needs of our citizens and visitors. A municipality that supports a healthy life”, concludes Mena.

What needs to be sorted out as priority is the pick pockets and muggings, to make it safe for tourists, a good police presence. This is my first visit to Tenerife and loved the place, but unfortunately will not return as do not feel safe day or night, you have to be on high alert, and only came into town once in the evening as felt unsafe
