The population pull that the south of Tenerife has experienced in recent years, with growth levels above the rest of the Island, will be reflected in the upcoming elections on May 28.
The increase in the number of registered residents in the last four years in the region will cause three municipalities, Granadilla de Abona, San Miguel de Abona and Güímar, to increase the number of councilors that will make up their municipal corporations.
In the case of Granadilla de Abona, which has far exceeded 50,000 inhabitants, the number of councilors will increase from the current 21 to 25, so that the absolute majority will stand at 13 councillors, while San Miguel de Abona and Güímar, after exceed 20,000 residents, they will increase their seats in the plenary halls from 17 to 21, which will raise the bar for an absolute majority to 11 councillors.
The General Electoral Regime Law is in charge of establishing the composition of the town councils based on the number of inhabitants of each municipality, based on the official data from the last census published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) in 2022. Thus, The law establishes that in those localities with a registered population of between 50,000 and 100,000 inhabitants, as is the case of Granadilla de Abona, 25 councilors will be elected (four more than at present), while those with between 20,000 and 50,000, as it happens in San Miguel de Abona and Güímar, 21 mayors will be designated (also four more).
To the three cases of Tenerife, we must add the municipality of Mogán, in the south of Gran Canaria, which will incorporate four more councilors in the elections on May 28, until reaching the figure of 21 by overcoming the barrier of 20,000 registered inhabitants.
The largest number of councilors will be elected in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (29), while 27 will be appointed in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, La Laguna and Telde. Betancuria, in Fuerteventura, will be the municipality with the least representation (7).
