He Town Hall of La Orotava awards its highest distinction to the Orotava Sports Union on the occasion of first centenary of a football club that was founded on March 9, 1923. The plenary session of the Consistory approved, unanimously, granting this award in recognition of the sporting career of the UD Orotava and in commemoration of its centenary, in accordance with the honorary distinctions that are included in the current Municipal Regulation of Protocol, Honors and Distinctions.
The village set is a history of Canarian football and it has a wide list of honors and numerous achievements throughout its hundred years of history, which prove, in the opinion of the Corporación villera, “sufficient merits that justify this honorary award”.
The origin of the club dates back to March 9, 1923, when it was founded under the name of Orotava Football Club. In 1944, other teams from the municipality joined Orotava FC, such as Victoria Football Club, Orotava Sports Club and San Pablo Football Club in order to generate a stronger and more competitive team that would adequately represent the northern town: UD Orotava. This union became official with the signing of the first statutes and the election of the first president of that new board of directors: Pedro Hernandez Mendez. The name of Unión Deportiva Orotava has been maintained from 1944 to the present, except for the period between April 1947 and early 1950, when the club competed under the name of Atlético Orotava.
