Last Wednesday, March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day, the Santiago del Teide City Council presented the awards for the III Edition of the “Concepción García Suárez” Awards (the first and only woman to be mayor to date). of the municipality) with which it seeks annual recognition of individuals and Canary Islands entities that carry out activities in favor of the elimination of discriminatory conditions and attitudes based on sex and against gender violence.
In this sense, in the modalities of prizes in contention, the sports journalist and native of the municipality, Selene Melian Gorrin received the award within the scope “Women in Media Award” given her career in the almost last 10 years in which she has carried out her work in a field traditionally occupied by men, specifically sports journalism, always linked to Radio Marca Tenerife since its inception and which has become a well-known face of sport in the Archipelago, both on Radio Marca and on Mírame Televisión and in other media, acting as a presenter or covering national news.
On the other hand, within the modality of “Women and Sport Award” the award went to the UD Granadilla Tenerife which in its 10 years since its foundation has had a great career and today is part of the first women’s division. If we add to this that some of their figures that came from the youth academy have reached the top of national and international football and have become benchmarks for many girls who see in them a role model, who have promoted the Association of Clubs of Women’s Soccer, from the year 2015, together with other national soccer teams, to help promote women’s soccer through the professionalization of its environment and the improvement of the conditions of clubs and players and that from the year 2020 have created the UDG Tenerife Academy, which is committed to transmitting educational, resilient and also professional values to girls from the islands who want to be soccer players, the granting of this award is more than justified.
The prizes to the winners were delivered by the mayor Emilio Navarro and the Councilor for Equality María José García Pérez. Likewise, it is worth mentioning that, as in previous editions, the gift given to each of the winners consisted of a unique handcrafted piece made by the users of the San Juan Association, highlighting that for it there was the elaboration of a mulberry wood base as well as the use of wool from sheep that they have on their own farm and whose painting represents the “Tara”, symbol of the Canarian woman.
The emotional act that took place at the Tamaimo Social Center ended with the performance of the singer María Isabel Quiñones better known as “Martirio” accompanied by Raúl Rodríguez on guitar.
