Arona recognized yesterday the struggle of the older women of the municipality to achieve gender equality, during the delivery gala of the Arona awards for Gender Equality, which this year has been awarded to the 11 older associations of the municipality, whose representatives took the stage to receive this recognition, which was delivered by the mayor, José Julián Mena, and the councilor for the Elderly and Equality areas, Ruth Lorenzo.

Hours before the awards ceremony, the manifesto for the 8M of the Canary Islands Federation of Municipalities (Fecam) was read.

Mena highlighted the work of women who “have been caregivers, daughters, mothers, wives… and who have not always had the opportunity to be recognized for themselves, for their identity as women, but rather for their condition with respect to men. Many, however, have raised awareness and have supported their daughters and granddaughters so that they become empowered”.

For her part, Ruth Lorenzo emphasized that the winners are “women and men who promoted women’s access to the workplace, who believed in, supported, and took laws and measures that recognized their rights into their daily lives.”

GRANADILLA AND ARICO

Granadilla de Abona claimed the need for a “call for empowerment” of women and girls to boost economic growth and promote social development. The San Isidro Espacio Cívico auditorium hosted the play Mujer 10 and a rally was held in the Plaza de la Cultura by the Violetas del Teide Association, in collaboration with the City Council.

For its part, the Arico City Council commemorated yesterday with an institutional act presided over by the Councilor for Equality, Dácil Cano, held in the same Consistory, which was attended by the rest of the councilors, several representatives of the Abona Women’s Association , the teachers of the Villa de Arico school and the athletes Miriam Santana, world champion of mixed martial arts, and Alexia Hernández, Spanish champion of the same discipline. All attendees carried a bouquet of flowers, which was delivered by the Equality area.
