The Tabona environmental group requests the mediation of the Common Deputy before the Government of the Canary Islands due to the deterioration suffered by the special natural reserve Malpaís de Güímar. Something that he attributes to the Government’s failure to Canary Islands by not approving the Plan for the Management of Natural Resources provided for in the Law for the Expansion of the Malpaís de Güímar Reserve of 2006.

The representatives of Tabona ask that the Güímar City Council comply with the ruling of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) and annul the reparcelling which is projected over the southeast area of the municipality. At the same time, they request that a new Partial and Compensation Plan be drawn up that contemplates the due protection of this natural reserve.

Monica Diaz Tabares, president of the group, insists that “it is necessary that the laws are complied with and that this valuable ecosystem be protected to the maximum, that in the Malpaís de Güímar there is not a single centimeter without protection. They have left this very special and fragile space defenseless, allowing attacks due to inaction and non-compliance with the Law that they are obliged to respect, allowing deterioration after deterioration”.

The Common Deputy undertook to ask the Government of the Canary Islands about non-compliance with the Second Transitory Provision of the aforementioned Law for the Expansion of the Malpaís de Güímar Reserve. He will also question the Güimarero City Council about the partial plan and express compliance with ruling 194 of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands in the southern area of the municipality.

Tabona presents two complaints in the Diputación del Común denouncing the situation in which this emblematic place is located. The group highlights the non-compliance in which the regional Executive incurs, assures for not drafting the new Master Plan within the year following the one required by law, when in 2006 the special nature reserve was extended to cover the entire space occupied by the Malpaís.

Mónica Díaz, spokesperson for the Southeast environmental group, denounces that the absence of this “fundamental by perceptive” document leads the administration to make “wrong” decisions. He cites the case of the authorization to plow and cultivate a strip of land that is carried out in Amogio, “within the special natural reserve.” In addition, on the north side there is an apiary with an access track “within the special nature reserve”. To the south, the Güímar City Council plans to develop “a piece of the special nature reserve” for public use as part of the Puertito de Güímar Partial Plan.
