A total of 1,282 people died between January and November 2022 on the waiting list of the dependency in the Canary Islands, which places the Canary Islands as the sixth autonomous community with the highest number of registered deaths, according to Government data.
By autonomous communities, the community in which the most people died on the waiting list in 2022 was Catalonia, with 9,200; followed by Andalusia, with 3,746; Basque Country, with 1,976; Community of Madrid, with 1,637; Valencian Community, with 1,409, and the Canary Islands, with 1,282.
In a response to a written question from VOX, to which Europa Press has had access, the Government points out that “this figure has been reduced substantially in the last two years due to the improvement in processing times derived from the implementation of the Plan Dependency Shock”.
Thus, it highlights that in 2020, 31,976 people died on the dependency waiting list (16.9% of the total deaths of people in dependency situations); in 2021, 26,212 people (16%) and, in 2022, 23,748 (13.1%).
The communities with fewer deaths among people on the waiting list were: Ceuta (16), Melilla (17), Castilla y León (32) and Navarra (140).
According to the Government, the process between application and resolution of the Individual Care Program (PIA) must cover a maximum of six months, as established by the Law for the Promotion of Personal Autonomy and Care for people in a situation of dependency.
The ‘waiting list’ is understood to be that made up of those people for whom more than six months have elapsed without a PIA resolution from the date of the application for an assessment, as specified by the Executive.
