A plot of land that was used as a landfill is on its way to a new life in Guía de Isora. It will be through the planting of 200 almond trees, with which it is intended to improve air quality and, in parallel, highlight this iconic tree of the Isoran landscape. As explained by the southern City Council, it is intended that, when it is finished, this space can receive guided tours. The Consistory is also thinking about the way to link it with the Isorana route of the almond tree, which runs through different nuclei of the municipality’s midlands.

The action is taking steps with a municipal agreement. «Recovering what are known as depressed rural areas, rehabilitating main roads and trails, is the objective of the ZRD workers, an agreement of the Guía de Isora City Council through which last December 44 long-term unemployed were incorporated into the municipal workforce. duration”, details the Consistory on the initiative. And, among the measures, the star is that project on the deteriorated plot.

The plot object of the improvement is located in the area of Los Meneses, between the town of Guía and Aripe

“This year, the great novelty among these recovery projects is the new carbon sink that is being developed in the Los Meneses area, between the town of Guía and Aripe,” the local institution specifies. «It is a municipal plot that will house more than 200 almond trees, forming a green lung in the municipality that will contribute to the absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) present in the atmosphere, favoring better air quality and advancing in the principles of sustainability,” they say.

In addition, at the same time, other works related to the rehabilitation of main roads and trails are being carried out, such as the one that connects the nucleus really from Erques with the hamlet of Las Fuentes. “There a crew of workers has been conditioning it to make it more easily passable by ranchers and hikers who frequent the area,” they expose from the City Hall. «This project has been financed with a grant of 161,210 euros from the Service of Employment State Public (SEPE) and is part of the strategy of the Guía de Isora City Council for the generation of employment in the municipality, ”he details.

The Isorana mayoress, Josefa Mesa, has highlighted the benefits generated by the project for both the municipality and the workers. “We are rehabilitating rural spaces that required intervention while facilitating the incorporation into the labor market of the long-term unemployed,” she said in a note. The local councilor has also taken the opportunity to congratulate the workers of the agreement, who, according to her, “are doing a magnificent job recovering the ethnographic heritage of these areas and restoring value to these spaces.”

a characteristic tree

The carbon sink is “an area with vegetation that contributes to reducing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, one of the simplest, most natural and most effective ways to sequester CO2,” says the City Council. «The almond tree has been chosen because it is a characteristic tree in the southwest region. Another reason is the little water that this species needs once it has adapted to the terrain, which makes it a more sustainable tree considering the low rainfall that occurs in the area,” he adds.

This facility will give way to another. And it is that a second enclosure will soon be developed in another nucleus of the municipality that will also act as a carbon sink. In this other case, it is the sustainable park of Piedra Hincada, which was recently announced by the Department of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands and that has an investment of 500,000 euros.
