The Güímar City Council will continue with the construction of a small treatment plant in the center of Golete, on the Agache coast, despite the manifest opposition of the residents, after rejecting yesterday, by nine votes to seven, the request to stop the works that the Popular Party and Citizens defended in an extraordinary plenary session called for that purpose.

With the presence of fifty residents in the plenary hall, the former Socialist Councilor for the Environment, Beatriz Perdomo, explained the reasons for the construction of this treatment plant, after the episodes of discharges into the sea that led the City Council to have to pay a fine of 3,000 euros in the previous term, when Luisi Castro governed. “Nothing was done then and since June 2019 we have had to solve the problem,” said both Perdomo and Airam Puerta, then mayor.

The opposition councilors presented their complaints for receiving the file very late, which the residents were repeatedly denied, and they even questioned the technical reports, insisting that the area does not have a sewage network, as the architect affirms. and municipal surveyor.

“We are not against sanitation, but they do put a shit factory next to your house,” said the popular Francisco Hernández Armas, who asked the mayor if he would like to be in the situation of a neighbor, whose housing has already begun to crack due to the works.

Beatriz Perdomo recognized, in her extensive report, that the work is not the best, but “it is the least bad solution” to end the discharges into the sea, because the solution does not involve a pumping station, predicting that “the The regional treatment plant will not start operating before five years”.

The mayor, in his final turn, admitted the reasons for the residents to protest and stated that “to this day, with the reports we have, we cannot stop the work”, while Airam Puerta, who ordered the construction of the treatment plant, He promised that “once it is finished, if there are bad smells or noises, corrective measures will have to be demanded.” The councilor said that, once all the sanitation is finished, the Agache wastewater will go to the regional treatment plant, closing the one that has already begun to be built, with a budget of 600,000 euros.

The curious thing is that this treatment plant is located on a small building plot of 119 square meters, bought by the City Council from some heirs of the land. It was so small that the initial project had to be modified to be able to build the facility that will end in an absorbent well, as there is still no sanitation network that connects with the Los Tarajales WWTP, in El Puertito.

they ask for its stoppage

During the plenary session, Pedro Pérez Rolo, spokesman for the residents, intervened strongly asking the mayor to stop the work and look for another place for its location. The technicians, according to Gustavo Pérez, looked at up to seven enclaves, but finally the one closest to the houses was chosen, to the chagrin of the residents, who now hope that the Prosecutor’s Office, which is investigating these works, will give them the reason that yesterday was denied by the full.
