The Local Police unions assure that they cannot exercise their powers in the Carnival

The Asipal, CC.OO., CSIF, Intersindical Canaria and UGT unions, with representation in the Local Police Corps, denounce that they are not being able to carry out their work normally in this Carnival, as has happened in other years. According to the unions, “in these Carnival festivities, areas of action and influence have been established by the National Police Corps, specifically the UIP Unit, which have previously been covered jointly, since 2005 by the Unit for the UNIPOL police and by the National Police”.

In this way, the UIP is responsible for the area determined between Plaza del Príncipe and Plaza de España, while the area between Plaza del Príncipe and Plaza Weyler is covered by the Local Police, “minimizing the presence of local police” ensure union formations.

In practice, this means that “the powers of the Local Police, related to the control of hours of entertainment venues, consumption and sale of alcohol to minors, assistance from health resources in the event of alcohol or drug intoxication, compliance with ordinances, citizen security , etc… have been left unattended or not attended to with the necessary speed, as we remember, they are not functions of the UIP, since they are assigned, by law, to the local police of the municipality”.

They assure that “the statements of the Security councilor that both Corps work in coordination throughout the Carnival area are unreal, we do not know if with or without her knowledge, since the situation of the Local Police surveillance posts and National Police are far away, dividing security at parties into two areas of influence, causing unnecessary delay in the attention of the services of both bodies. They assure that “all this maneuver we understand that it is aimed at making the disappearance of the UNIPOL group go unnoticed, a unit that does not exist due to the negligence produced by this City Council, especially by the Security area, and Human Resources, and whose restoration, of legally, we have requested the aforementioned trade union organizations on several occasions.”

They describe as “inadmissible” that Carnival security is divided into zones, something that “does not happen in any municipal event in Spanish territory.”
