SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 17 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has recognized this Friday that the central government has made “risky” decisions, such as the reform of the Penal Code and the crimes of sedition and embezzlement, but has specified that always for the “interest” of Spain , which is a “complex country”.

In an interview given to the ‘Herrera en Cope’ program and collected by Europa Press, he said that he does not know “what is going to happen” in the elections and if the decisions of the Sánchez Executive are going to affect the autonomous territories because now there are ” a lot of reflection and previous opinion”.

The Canarian president maintains that in the economic sphere, the central government “has responded with solvency” in the midst of a situation that “has been very difficult” and that in the case of the Canary Islands, for example, has “saved” the working class despite the 20% drop in GDP in 2020 with aid that allowed to keep “open companies”.

He has also highlighted the achievement of the labor reform, which was carried out with “consensus” and separating the “differences” between employers and workers.

Along these lines, he has said that “the public will value it” because it is getting out of the crisis in a “different way” from that of 2008.

Regarding the polls, he has commented that “people are finding out and speaking little” and “they say the opposite at the time of voting” but he is aware that the PSOE can go up to 25 deputies and CC “loses steam”.

However, he has commented that “the important thing” is the day of the vote and afterwards, the conformation of the governments because “politics changed” and we must be prepared for “governments of alliances and pacts” and there, some political formations ” They have more difficulties.”

Regarding relations between Spain and Morocco, he indicated that as they are border countries “they have to be the best possible” since “if it is bad, those who pay first are those closest to it”, where irregular immigration also arrives.

“Having good relations is good”, he pointed out, without forgetting that there are issues that have to do with human rights and historical claims, the case of Western Sahara, the resolution of which “is not easy”.

In addition, it has indicated that there is a “special commercial relationship” between the Canary Islands and Morocco, with companies from the islands established there and a large colony of the Moroccan population in the archipelago, especially in Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.

“The worst thing for us would be to have conflictive relations between the two countries,” he added.

The president has also commented that irregular immigration “has loosened”, with a drop of more than 70% in January compared to the previous year, apart from the fact that after the “mistake” of eliminating reception infrastructures, which generated a situation “very difficult”, now there is a stable network that prevents overcrowding, as happened at the Arguineguín dock.
