Santa Cruz City Hall Tenerife will initiate a penalty file for the only public car park, of the seven inspected by Public Services, that has not yet reduced its rates, “violating the municipal order issued in this regard and all the deadlines given for it.” This is announced by the mayor responsible for the area, Carlos Tarifeof the PP, who points out that it is the Ramón y Cajal car park. He informs that a first sanction will be imposed, “for committing a serious infraction”, of 601 euros and warns that the procedure could end with the redemption of the concession.
If after this first fine, the aforementioned parking lot continues to maintain its prices, a second one will be imposed, of another 601 euros, which “is the maximum amount that the specifications allow us to reach,” according to Tarife. After the imposition of two sanctions, adds the mayor, a third file will be initiated for the commission of a very serious offense, which will cause the extinction of the concession granted at the time by the Consistory to the company responsible for the parking lot for its exploitation.
The head of Public Services warns the Ramón y Cajal parking lot that the City Council “will go to the last consequences.” «What cannot be is that the rest of the public parking lots in Santa Cruz have complied with the update of the rates, which were very high, and that one of these facilities wants to skip the municipal reports. It is in the hands of the managers of this car park that the concession is not rescued by the Consistory », he states.
In the case of the Ramón y Cajal car park, and according to municipal reports, the rate must be reduced by 46.3%, from 2.24 euros per hour to 1.53. The payment of the canon to the City Council is up to date.
With regard to the inspection process of the public parking lots in the capital carried out by the City Council, Tarife highlights that from Public Services an “impeccable” technical and legal work has been carried out, with which, he adds, “we have achieved that all the public car parks in Santa Cruz, with the exception of the case of Ramón y Cajal, have reduced their prices, so today it is much more attractive to park in this municipality”.
The inspection of the seven parking lots of the municipality with an administrative concession granted by the City Council began in 2019. The parking lots are those of the Weyler SquareTomé Cano, Puente Serrador, Spain Square, Stadium, El Pilar, and Ramón y Cajal. As a result of that inspection, Public Services detected “non-compliances” related to the rates, “because in all cases more was being charged than what was established in the contract,” and with the canon that the winning companies must pay. The municipal technicians were issuing, separately and on different dates, the proposed agreements to correct the “non-compliances”. The first report issued was that of the Puente Serrador car park, in April 2022, and the last, that of the Plaza de España, in June.
Public Services gave the car parks a period of time to comply with the orders, but they presented allegations. Once answered, the City Council again granted them a month to lower prices. Some have even filed appeals. Finally, six of the seven car parks inspected have already reduced their rates and are up to date with the fee. Those that have complied are those of Weyler, Tomé Cano, Puente Serrador, Plaza de España, Estadio and El Pilar. The municipal order of Ramón y Cajal continues not to be complied with, for which, and according to Tarife, all the deadlines have expired.
Weyler. The Plaza Weyler parking lot was the first to comply with the Public Services order and lower its prices. Specifically, the rate has been reduced by 55%, from 2.33 euros per hour (0.031 euros per minute) to 1.50 euros (0.025 euros per minute).
