School nurses in the Canary Islands update their knowledge in cardiopulmonary resuscitation

A total of 39 school nurses from Canary Islands participated this Thursday, February 9, in a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) workshop jointly organized by the Directorate of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) and the Official College of Nursing of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. These professionals represent all the school nurses who carry out their work on all the islands of the archipelago, who were also joined by the professionals in charge of substitutions in these tasks.

During the workshop, theoretical-practical sessions were given to update knowledge in the CPR technique, especially aimed at caring for children in emergencies.

This workshop, which has made it possible to increase the practical skills of school nurses in the CPR technique, addressed issues such as the chain of survival, vital functions, recommendations for basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation in children, foreign body asphyxia, basic instrumental life support and the use of the semiautomatic defibrillator (DESA).

This course is part of the training plan that is contemplated within the piloting of the implementation of school nursing in the Canary Islands.

school nursing

Last January the Ministries of Health and Education, Universities, Culture and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands launched the Nursing Pilot Program in the school environment with the incorporation of nurses in Early Childhood and Primary Education centers and Special Education Centers throughout the archipelago.

The pilot project benefits 14,831 boys and girls, including around 500 with Special Educational Needs (SEN). In total, some twenty nurses carry out this initiative in sixty infant, primary and special education centers corresponding to 36 basic health areas on all the islands.

With this pilot project, the figure of Nursing professionals is introduced in the classroom to meet the needs and health problems of the students, acting in the prevention of diseases and promoting the health of the entire educational community.
