Silence hides the truth of who killed the student Javier Fernández Quesada

“Quesada. The truth of silence”, is the title that the also filmmaker Iván López has directed to remember the murder of student Javier Fernández Quesadawho was 22 years old when he was assassinated on December 12, 1977 during a demonstration in the Auditorium of the University of La Laguna.

Ivan Lopez, who was born in Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife) a year before the murder of Javier Fernández Quesada and that the investigation began 13 years ago, he expects the documentary to be released on December 12, 2023, 46 years after the young man’s death as a result of a shot.

Iván López has also referred to the fact that a coherent ballistics report was not made and the shadows are still there because an effort was never made to have conclusive evidence.

The documentary is in the post-production phase and will be a testimony of the context of the time, of years that were hellish for Tenerife, where four violent deaths occurred from the death of Franco, in November 1975, until December 1977, he said. Ivan Lopez.

A documentary that also seeks democratic value, since it shows that the transition was not as exemplary as it is said, even though steps were taken towards democratization, but these facts were never judged, no one was blamed or reached conclusions, added Iván López.

He has highlighted that 46 years after the murder, the version that the death was caused by a shot remains, but a clean slate has been made, and Iván López has asserted that it is not about revenge but about knowing what has happened.

Iván López, who is the author of short films, has two feature films, such as “Clandestinos, fronteras en el mar”, produced on the occasion of the crisis of the cayucos in the Canary Islands in 2006, and “Plato”.

After meeting this Monday with the president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Gustavo Matos, to thank the financial support that the Legislative Chamber plans to give to the work, Iván López told Efe that his first intention was to make a short film, but the investigation in newspaper archives and the testimonies of some 30 people have led him to consider that the most appropriate is a documentary film.

Iván López intended to speak, who at the time of the murder was the civil governor, Luis Mardones, and with his family, but it has not been possible and for this reason he has decided to end the documentary, which also talks about childhood and dreams that Javier Fernández Quesada had.

Also a journalist, he explained that the title of the documentary is due to the fact that many people say that the name of the person who killed Javier Fernández Quesada is known, but nobody dares to say it, so in silence lies the truth of what happened.

Iván López has commented that for the documentary he has contacted a civil guard who was at the scene of the murder, but he did not want to say the name of the person who fired the shot, and he recalled that everything indicates that he was presumably an agent of the armed institute, since there is corroborating witnesses.

At the time, an attempt was made to blame anti-Franco groups, but there is no evidence or argument to support it, pointed out Iván López, who pointed out that only civil guards fired shots at the scene of the murder.
