The Municipal Library of the orotava registered 5,285 users at the end of 2022, a figure that is close to the activity it registered in the pre-pandemic. This center has 64,024 copies and has an inclusive corner with books in braille and adapted publications.
The report of this service shows that several indicators improve compared to the two previous years and are close, in some cases, to the pre-pandemic figures. Such is the case of the consultations of newspaper documents, which doubled the data of the previous year with more than 10,000 copies consulted, or the documents on foreign loan, which were more than 11,400. During the last year, 210 readers joined.
Mayor, Francisco Linarespointed out that of the four million that the City Council allocates to Culture and Education, andEmploys 500,000 euros a year to maintain this space, where the library and study room are located. Along these lines, he highlighted that the City Council is working to enable a new study room with 90 seats and a permanent opening in the center. The councilor assured that there is already a project for another study room on the old site of the theater Atlante, with about 150 seats.
The Municipal Library was created in 1988 at the site of the old casino. Its director, Juan Carlos González, stressed that 4,446 of the 5,285 readers are adults and 836 are under 14 years of age. Regarding the type of reader, it is observed that the infant-juvenile group reaches almost 22%. The newspaper library already has 12,432 registered copies while the media library has 2,087 copies, mostly audiovisual.
