The storm paints Las Cañadas del Teide white and leaves more hail on Gran Canaria

The storm that has especially affected several Canary Islands last weekend and has left historical images such as the hailstorm recorded last Saturday in Lanzarote lasted yesterday without, happily, resulting in any relevant events, to such an extent which only highlights the fact that the authorities had to temporarily close the accesses to the Las Canadas del Teide National Park for a good part of the day and some traffic jams in Gran Canaria due to such inclement weather.

By far, the most striking were the low temperatures registered in the Tenerife peaks, since the gauges of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) They put the minimum detected in Izaña at -4.5 degrees Celsius with regard to the Archipelago.

As is logical, the precipitations there took place in the form of snow, although the white blanket that came to rest on Las Cañadas was far from being typical of a copious snowfall, although the corresponding frost forced, as a preventive measure, that the authorities (in this case, the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife) ordered to stop road traffic to the area via the TF-21 (the ascent from La Orotava) and the TF-24 (which leads to the summit from La Esperanza, a decision taken mid-morning yesterday “due to the presence of snow and ice sheets on the road”, as reported by said local corporation through its official account on the social network Twitter.

as it came it went

Since access from the South was free of obstacles, quite a few novelists took the opportunity to enjoy the always spectacular images offered by the highest peak in Spain in winter when the cold raged, but the sunrise soon undid the effects on the landscape of such low temperatures.

Regarding what happened in Gran Canaria, where hail once again made an appearance in some areas, the Cecoes 1-1-2 of the Government of the Canary Islands only registered a few incidents due to traffic difficulties with respect to the municipality of Valleseco, in addition to stating that on the summits of the Redonda Island there was some slight frost.

Regarding the rainfall in the rest of Tenerife, they continued to make an appearance as during last Saturday, although, and despite including some stick of water in areas such as the capital of the Island itself, they were as brief as they were intense, in such a way that the accumulated maximum took place in Anaga, with an unimpressive 12.6 liters per square meter on average as the highest for the Archipelago, followed by 5.6 in San Juan de La Rambla and 3.8 in Santa Cruz and The Lagoon.

For today

It remains to report on the forecasts of the Aemet specialists about today, where the most outstanding thing is that warnings for meteorological risks in the Archipelago continue to not be raised, but temperatures will not only continue as yesterday but may drop, as well to note that leaving the umbrella at home does not seem like a good idea, since “occasional rainfall during the second half of the day is likely, mainly on the northern slopes of the larger islands”, that is, Tenerife and La Palma.

So that a classic ingredient is not missing from the island weather stew, a “light haze is expected in the easternmost islands”.
