The Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife closed last year as the second in the country in passenger movement: 6,264,726 and an increase of 35%. It is only surpassed by that of the Balearic Islands. Of the total, 5.1 million are passengers under the transport regime – users of the regular passenger lines that link the islands – 23% more than in 2021, an increase that the Port Authority described as “spectacular”.
The 800,000 cruise passengers registered in 2022 place the entity that manages ports of general interest in the province of Tenerife among the five in the country with the highest growth in this type of tourism.
For him Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife passed in 2022 a total of 2,269,367 passengers, 60 percent more than in 2021In turn, 1.6 million corresponded to passengers under the transport regime and 542,290 to cruise passengers, three times the number registered last year. After the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is that of La Gomera with the second highest number of passengers under transport, moving 1,193,500 passengers, 294,000 more than the previous year.
Not only the number of passengers grew, but also the traffic of merchandise in the Chicharrero Port, with 10.5 million tons of total traffic moved from January to December, 1.2 million more than in 2021, and consequently 13.07 percent more. Within this section, both general merchandise, with practically six million tons moved, and liquid bulk, with 3.5 million tons and an increase of 22 percent, and the supplies themselves, both water and gas, improved their figures. of fuel, with 541 tons supplied and a percentage increase of 36 percent over the previous year.
Solid bulk traffic
Only solid bulk traffic fell by 9% in 2022, as a result of the 40,000 fewer tons moved in relation to the previous year, thus stagnating at 391,440. With regard to containers, 263,900 units passed through the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife -26,400 more-, which translates into a positive of 11% and practically 3,000 ships were provisioned, 409 more than in the previous year.
In a recent interview, Carlos González, president of the Port Authority, assures that “we are already at pre-pandemic levels, with many balance sheets similar to 2019 and in some cases even higher.” «In merchandise traffic we are at 12 million tons in the province, in passenger traffic at more than 6 million, in cruise stopovers we are above 2019 – in cruise passengers not because the ships continue to apply restrictions – and in the traffic of We are going to close the year with 1.7 million passenger vehicles, which makes us the first in Spain in this type of traffic and second in passengers,” he concluded.
