The Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital (Hunsc) has opened the term for bidding on the preliminary project and subsequent technical project for the execution of a Hemodialysis Unit in the southern hospital.

The aforementioned unit will depend on the Nephrology Service of the hospital center and would allow patients in the southern area of the Island to receive various treatments without having to travel to Santa Cruz, according to what the Canary Islands Government Health Department reported yesterday.

Likewise, the initiative will have a budget of 49,000 euros and a three-month execution project, in which a specific architectural study will be undertaken for the creation of a specialized hospital area in the space provided for this purpose.

The functional plan will have 18 hemodialysis stations, 12 of which will be for chronic patients; three will be destined to receive treatment in isolation, and three for acute patients.

For its part, the new unit increases the portfolio of services of the Hospital del Sur and responds to the needs of patients in dialysis treatments, which will continue to be controlled by the Nephrology Service of the Candelaria Hospitalwith the advantage of avoiding transfers to Santa Cruz.

Health indicated that hemodialysis sessions usually take place three days a week, so receiving treatment in the basic health area in the south of the island means an improvement in the quality of life of affected patients.

In this way, patients with peritoneal dialysis, undergoing home treatment, will have closer care support for the removal of the material and medicine necessary for their day-to-day life, and for the resolution of possible doubts or difficulties that may arise.

UPWARD TREND

Advanced chronic renal failure susceptible to receiving replacement treatment (dialysis or kidney transplant) presents an upward trend in the Canary Islands: today with more than 3,000 patients who need this treatment. Contrary to what happens in the South, kidney patients in the North already have a hemodialysis service that allows them to treat themselves at home.

The Nephrology Service of the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario de Canarias (HUC) launched this service two years ago with a modality that allows patients to carry out the treatment in their own home and, therefore, avoid traveling to the hospital.
