The Council of Tenerife today presented the Tenerife On platform, a pioneering tool for the use of protected natural spaces in the archipelago and which will allow its users to receive information on different itineraries for hikers on foot, bicycle, horseback or with motor vehicles, as well as the equipment available in each area. Tenerife On includes some 700 km of trails, around 180 km of forest tracks, 18 routes for bicycles and horses, 26 routes for motor vehicles, more than 20 recreational areas, 14 camping areas, 3 campsites and 26 rest areas. The application is available for both IOS and Android, and can be downloaded through the App Store, the Play Store or the official Tenerife ON website.

“We are facing an app that will be the turning point in the way of planning or choosing the routes in between, since in its use, with and without coverage, it warns about signage, legal permits required for certain sections, access to points using public transport, the three-day weather forecast and telephone numbers of interest, among others”, indicated the counselor of the Natural Environment and Security Management area, Isabel García.

“It has been almost two years of intense work, and we firmly believe that it will be an agile, safe, real-time tool that will open up a new perspective when planning routes or stays in nature. In addition, the proposal is extended to those who visit us, and it is offered in three languages, with the intention of reaching as many people as possible”, said the counselor.

Tenerife has 43 Protected Natural Areas (ENP), ranking as the island with the most protected places in the archipelago, and they account for 48.6% of its surface. To take advantage of the benefits of these environmentally conscious spaces, the Cabildo de Tenerife presents Tenerife ON, the first official platform to enjoy leisure time in the island’s ENPs. The Environment area has developed a web portal and a free application that offers up-to-date, rigorous and reliable information and that allows interested people to organize routes and outdoor sports activities with greater safety.

The main objective of this project is to raise awareness, both among people who live in the Canary Islands and tourists, about the responsible use of nature, as well as to raise awareness about the protection of the environment in leisure activities.

Itineraries and equipment available

Currently has 173 itineraries spread throughout the island. Its search filters allow interested people to find or customize the appropriate routes based on the level of difficulty, the area of interest, the duration of the route, the unevenness they will find (altimetry) or the total distance. This is especially useful for families with children, school groups or people who are just starting out in outdoor sports and want to take easier routes, but also for professional athletes who are looking for more difficult routes.

They will also be able to adjust their itineraries depending on the equipment they wish to find along the way, such as camping areas, recreational areas, campgrounds, rest areas or visitor centers. Each of the 40 available facilities includes photographs, the possibility of evaluation, curiosities and its position on a map.

Differences between the Web and the App

The web platform allows interested persons to access all the information available on ENPs and how to use them responsibly. As a main advantage compared to the web, by downloading the free application of Tenerife ON they will be able to register their sporting activity and view their routes offline. In other words, if at any time during the journey the coverage is lost or they cannot access the Internet, the users of the App will be able to follow their itinerary without any problem.

News and alerts

Another advantage of this official platform is its alert system, which informs users of substantial changes in routes or equipment. For example, if a recreational area is under construction or there are landslides on a road, a red bell on the route will warn of incidents and set the guidelines to follow in each case.

Interactive map

Likewise, the platform has a very complete interactive map, which shows all the available routes and their data of interest to the public. The map design includes points of natural interest and all the facilities, cultural services and itineraries available, as well as marking the routes with different colors depending on the means of transport in which they are to be completed (on foot, by bicycle, on horseback). , etc.). In turn, they will be able to customize the search for activities thanks to their filters. The map can be viewed following the topographic drawing of Tenerife ON or in satellite mode to have a realistic view of the relief of each area.

In addition, in this section, you will also be able to access a suggestion service, where the platform itself recommends routes and itineraries based on public evaluations, the interests of each user, or trails related to those already taken.
