The Councilor for Sustainable Development and the Fight Against Climate Change of the Cabildo, javier rodriguezvisited this Monday, January 30, the existing treatment plant, which processes 6,800 cubic meters of wastewater per day, and recalled that with the new system “triple can be treated”.
The current treatment plant receives water from Cross portLos Realejos and La Orotavathe three most populous municipalities in the North, where some 110,000 people reside and there are more than 20,000 hotel and non-hotel beds. The increase in population in recent years and the passage of time itself condition the operation of this Industrial water treatmentwhich is intended to be renovated in two phases.

The planned investment exceeds 34 million euros
The new sewage treatment plant of the La Orotava Valley Upon completion, it will process 20,000 cubic meters of water per day or, in other words, “triple what it is currently treating.” Rodríguez Medina stressed the importance of the project that is underway during the visit to the current treatment plant together with the mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Marco González (PSOE). He stressed that once the work on the regional collectors is finished “a greater volume of water will arrive, so we want to lighten the construction deadlines for the new plant as much as possible. We already have the project to expand this treatment plant and what we want is that it can be executed as quickly as possible».

The goal of Island Water Council Tenerifethe Cabildo and the City Council is clear: to be able to execute these two expansion phases of this treatment plant, so we are going to continue taking all the necessary administrative steps to get it up and running.
Since March 2022, works are being carried out on main collectors, especially in La Orotava and Los Realejos, which are the most deficient areas in the sanitation network. Some works budgeted at more than 12.5 million euros. The project for the new treatment plant, whose drafting has cost 188,251 euros, contemplates the execution in two phases. In the first phase it will be treated with technology Membrane BioReactor (MBR), a flow of 10,000 cubic meters per day of wastewater. A flow equivalent to that of some 90,000 inhabitants. This first phase will cost 21,521,000 euros and requires 24 months of execution. The second phase will complete wastewater treatment by adding another 10,000 cubic meters a day. In addition, it will contemplate the tertiary treatment of purified water through reversible electrodialysiswhich will allow them to be reused for agricultural irrigation and other uses.
