SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 27 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The plenary session of the Cabildo de Tenerife unanimously approved this Friday of all the political groups an institutional motion, presented by the Socialist Group, to fight against female genital mutilation, a practice that is estimated to have affected 200 million women and girls all over the planet.
Coinciding with the celebration, on February 6, of the ‘International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation’, the island corporation has expressed its resounding rejection of this “abhorrent aggression” against the body of women and girls, and has agreed to urge the Government of the Canary Islands to formalize, jointly between education and health, the actions to identify girls at risk.
In the same way, the regional Executive is asked to carry out a training plan aimed at health professionals and teachers, and to launch an educational project to raise awareness among students enrolled in the Canary Islands and their families.
The Equality area of the Cabildo, headed by the CEO Priscila de León, undertakes to coordinate with the organized groups of women (African Women AMAC, Médicos del Mundo and Dimbe), which come together under the umbrella of Stop Female Genital Mutilation, to develop any awareness action.
At the national level, the Government of Spain is urged to offer protection to migrant girls, young people and women in the country, in coordination with migrant communities in destination countries and to implement coordinated strategies against female genital mutilation that involve the community migrant and professionals in the social, educational and health fields, collects a note from the Cabildo.
In this line, the European Union and the Spanish Government are asked to promote strategies to raise awareness about human rights, gender equality, sexual education and care for victims of female genital mutilation.
In addition, it has been agreed to urge the UN and its member states to ensure the human rights of women and girls around the world.
