In just over three hours, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) has detected about 40 earthquakes in the area known as Enmedio Volcano, between the islands of Tenerife Y Gran Canaria. Thus, the IGN has reported this Friday afternoon that since 12:30 “a seismic series is taking place.” As of 4:00 p.m., 37 earthquakes have been located, most at a depth between 30 and 40 kilometers and with magnitudes (mbLg) between 1.7 and 2.6.
Some of the earthquakes are also located at depths between 0 and 10 kilometers. Automatic systems have detected 74 earthquakes.
From the IGN It is reported that work continues to follow up on this seismic swarm.
The area between Tenerife and Gran Canaria usually has a seismicity apparently of tectonic origin though not entirely known. Every year more than 400 earthquakes are located in this area. In the last 5 years there have been 3 similar seismic series in the area and at those depths.
