The Arona Winter University (UIA), whose registration period has been open since December 1, has a varied offer of university extension courses this 2023 that will be taught in the afternoons this month and in February and March at the Cultural Center of Los Cristianos , from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The price of registration for people registered in the municipality is 10 euros, while the general registration costs 20 euros.
The Winter University of Arona is a project of the City Council, initiated by the current government in the previous term, whose objective is to bring higher education closer to the municipality and the Southern Region, hand in hand with the University of La Laguna (ULL), an initiative that has been consolidated over time. In this edition, The UIA will offer six courses thatwhich will be taught between January 24 and March 9. Each one will last three days and the main topics revolve around verification against disinformation; the socio-environmental impact of tourism or comics.
List of courses
The first course will begin next day 24 and is entitled Verification as a health tool against misinformation, which will offer the student to develop their critical capacity, thus being able to evaluate the veracity of information related to health while communicating based on evidence, scientific knowledge, procedures and ideas. Aimed at the general public with a special interest in knowing relevant and current aspects of health that are the target of hoaxes and false news on a daily basis. It is directed by Javier Suárez, pharmacist and doctor in Health Sciences from the ULL; and Ana María Santoveña, full professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Technology of the ULL.
The second course is titled Introduction to programming with Python. It will start on the 30th and it is necessary to bring your own laptop. Taught by Pedro A. Toledo, contracted professor and PhD from the Department of Computer Engineering and Systems of the ULL, and Sergio Díaz, professor of the Department of Computer Engineering and Systems of the ULL, the objective of the course is for students new to programming incorporate sufficient knowledge to improve their work efficiency, automating tasks, processing data and solving simple problems in an automated manner. University students must function in an environment that implies knowledge and adequate management of technologies. It is especially aimed at non-computer students from all branches of knowledge.
The third course will begin on February 7, Produce and market organic products: from farm to table, which will provide students with the basic tools to learn about the main marketing channels and organic production. Know the experiences of direct marketing and its characteristics. Aimed at students of Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Sciences and Biology; agricultural training students; professional and amateur farmers; unemployed. It will be taught by Antonio C. Perdomo, associate professor of the Plant Production Area of the Department of Agricultural Engineering and the Natural Environment of the ULL.
mental health and wellness It is the fourth course that will be taught at the UIA 2023. It will begin on February 15 and interested people will know or expand their knowledge about mental health, emotional intelligence and ways to develop it, positive psychology and how to approach emotional education from childhood. The academic direction is the responsibility of Celia Morales, PhD assistant professor of the Department of Specific Didactics of the ULL.
The fifth course, which begins on February 28, will be Social and environmental impacts of tourism. Attendees will obtain the knowledge bases in relation to the socio-environmental impacts of tourism, with special emphasis on the effects on society and culture, in order to integrate into work teams made up of professionals from different fields. Aimed at consultants and public administration technicians, businessmen, university students and professional training and anyone interested in the subject of sustainability, tourism and its environmental impacts. The course will be taught by Pablo Díaz, PhD assistant professor of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the ULL.
Finally, on March 7, the course The comic from an interdisciplinary point of view will take place, aimed at anyone interested in the world of comics, both from its artistic perspective and from its condition as a means of communication and transmission of ideas. Luis Javier Capote, professor of Civil Law at the ULL, and Eva Mª. gonzalezPhD in Communication Sciences, will teach the course.
