SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 21 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Noble Hall of the Cabildo de Tenerife has hosted the presentation of the book ‘Lucha del garrote: variantes y complementos’, by the author Jorge Domínguez Naranjo, the second volume of a trilogy published in collaboration between the different island councils and the Federation of Garrote Wrestling Canary.

Present at the presentation were the Island Councilor for Sports, Concepción Rivero; the president of the Canarian Garrote Wrestling Federation, Carlos Barrera; the insular director of the area, Ángel Luis Pérez, and the author of the work, Jorge Domínguez.

Concepción Rivero stressed that this work will contribute to “train the instructors of this discipline, as well as the technical staff or any other person who wishes to delve into this art of combat from the Canary Islands and, in addition, it will promote the strengthening of cultural identity among the young people who are part of the base sport of the Island”.

In this line, the counselor explained that the Cabildo de Tenerife “is committed to the native games and sports that make up our idiosyncrasy” and stressed that this work “has the support of the Island Corporation because it will make known the basic techniques of the fight of the garrote, a modality typical of the Archipelago, as well as its variants and its complements”.

The president of the Canarian Garrote Wrestling Federation, Carlos Barrera, highlighted “the importance of getting this cultural wealth to society, starting with the little ones who are the future of our traditions” and stressed that a teacher “has no You have to be in the NBA to teach basketball, so you don’t have to be a wrestling champion to teach the art of the club either.”

The insular director of the Sports area, Ángel Luis Pérez, affirmed that as a physical education teacher, I have always been concerned with making traditional games and sports known among young people, since “it is essential for their rescue and dissemination.” In addition, he highlighted that, although everyone refers to Canarian wrestling when talking about vernacular sports, there is great diversity, since there are 13 of its own modalities.

The author of the work, Jorge Domínguez, explained that this book “collects a battle that took place from generation to generation in order to recover something that only older people kept, that generation that had been silenced, since in the beginning the club was not part of culture or sports, it was a weapon.

In this line, he influenced his efforts to teach what has been learned in this art in order not to lose our traditions. “For this I had to create my own teaching method, in which I combined the different techniques learned for their subsequent dissemination, since the teachers did not have a methodology, but rather worked by instinct”, the author recounted.

Jorge Domínguez has been researching for more than 40 years to rescue the roots of our traditions and with his publications he contributes to the training of personnel related to this discipline and the dissemination of knowledge about club fighting among the general population. He has more than a dozen published books that deal with the roots of this tradition.
