More than 40,500 boys and girls receive oral care through the SCS Padican program

The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands has attended during 2022 to a total of 40,551 boys and girls between the ages of six and fourteen within the framework of the Children’s Dental Care Program of the Canary Islands (Padican), developed within the framework of the collaboration agreement signed in 2008 by the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) and the Official Colleges of Dentists of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife and which has recently been extended for another year, that is, until December 31, 2023.

Of the 40,551 minors cared for by Padican during the past year, 20,193, that is, 49.79 percent, were girls, and the remaining 20,358, 50.21 percent, were boys.

The purpose of the Padican is guarantee oral care to the entire child and youth population protected by the Canarian health systemaged between six and fourteen (both ages included), in the terms set forth in the Resolution of the General Directorate of Assistance Programs of February 11, 2008 (BOC No. 45, of March 3).

Coverage in the region

To carry out this care, the aforementioned agreement was signed between the SCS and the Official Colleges of Dentists of both provinces with the following coverage:

-The benefits of oral health care to the child population aged six to fourteen, both ages included, with the right to health care charged to the SCS and residing in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands.

-The services provided for in the Program, carried out in accordance with the collaboration framework established by the parties. These services include basic benefits (annual check-ups, sealing figures, fillings in permanent teeth, extractions, etc.) and special services, which are carried out exclusively by private dentists attached to the agreement (endodontics, major reconstruction after endodontics, apicoformation, reimplantations, provisional crown, etc.).
