The Plenary of the City Council of Tacoronte approved on Monday a new ordinance that will allow granting direct aid to control and eradicate from the municipality the underground termite Reticulitermes flavipes that has produced structural damage in buildings and urban furniture, also affecting trees and crops and therefore, putting at risk the safety of people and generating significant economic losses in many residents of the town.

For this reason, the objective of this regulation is to solve the problem that this plague has caused in homes in the city, directly helping those affected to face the costs of applying treatments for their extinction. At the same time, it is intended to simplify the concession procedure without thereby losing guarantees in their granting, but if their management is improved, which will provide better assistance to the citizen.

The call was approved with the favorable votes of the government group (NC-PSOE and Sí se Podemos), Cs and the two non-attached councilors Carlos Medina and Sandra Ramos and only received the negative vote of the Canary Coalition (CC) and the abstention of former councilor Cs Candelaria Dorta.

The mayor, José Daniel Díaz, assures this newspaper that the situation in the municipality “is controlled but not extinguished”, except for the focus that was in Los Naranjeros. “Even so, it is also intended to attack private lands so that there are no islands or reservoirs of the plague that leave colonies that can then reproduce again.”

Reticulitermes flavipes is a very invasive termite species, due to its rapid reproduction rate, the large number of individuals in each colony and its adaptation to low temperatures. This means that it can occupy different heights and that in the low and midlands areas it has a much greater activity throughout the year.

This ordinance means greater agility when granting aid by doing so directly. Its maximum amount is 3,000 euros. Another of the changes that it introduces is that the beneficiaries should not be up to date on tax and Social Security debts and as it is an emergency “it allows to attack the cases of families who could not present themselves to the previous call due to not having a good situation economic ”, highlights the mayor.
