The Councilor for Municipal Services of Los Realejos, Domingo García, reported that during the year 2022 the royal citizens deposited 87,627 kilos of clothing and footwear in the more than 50 selective collection containers destined for this purpose and distributed throughout the municipality, an initiative that fulfills different objectives.

The mayor, Adolfo González, explained that, “in addition to the environmental awareness that the administrations seek to promote selective collection, in this case, this practice means savings in the rate that the municipality pays to the Island Solid Waste Plant (PIRS), around 5,000 euros less, since it is waste that would otherwise end up in generic containers and would add 87 more tons to be dumped at this plant”.

He also recalled that “Los Realejos was a pioneer in 2017 among the Canary Islands municipalities in dressing these containers in pink, identifying the Fight against breast cancernot only making the disease visible, but obtaining the commitment of an annual contribution that the concessionaire of the collection service, Canarias Recycling, makes to the love yourself association”.

“In the last five years, more than 80 tons of clothing and footwear have been collected annually in these pink containers and this is only the result of an increasingly widespread citizen practice, such as recycling and selective waste disposal, Therefore, we owe it to the realejeros and the realejeras that initiatives like this, in which the City Council and its service company Realserv are simple intermediaries, make sense, in this environmental and social case”, valued Adolfo González.

For her part, the councilor for the area of Equality, Citizen Participation and Disability, Macarena Hernández, in direct contact with social entities such as Ámate, stressed that “any help, not only to make its existence and activity visible, but also in economic matters for the development of her research, training or therapy projects, she is always welcome and very well received by these associations”, which carry out important work.
