SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Jan. 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Canary Islands closed 2022 with the recognition of the Individual Care Program (PIA) for more than 7,900 people and almost 10,000 benefits granted.

This is how the Government of the Canary Islands points out this Wednesday, which also details that December has therefore become the month with the largest number of people with the right to dependency recognized in the Canary Islands (1,233 people) since the implementation of the Law in the year 2007, as stated in the official data of the IMSERSO.

The Minister of Social Rights, Noemí Santana, points out in a note the “excellent management” that has been carried out in the last year and explains that, currently, the Canary Islands care for 34,698 dependent people, with a total of 38,666 benefits, both economic as services.

“The economic benefits have meant a very important advance in the care of dependent people in 2022, reaching 12 million euros in arrears to people who had been waiting for more than 10 years for the recognition of their right, in addition, it has tripled the number of services provided, such as home help, promotion of personal autonomy and telecare, have tripled this year”, he indicates.

Canarias has a double procedure, the recognition of the degree and the PIA.

Thus, in the first phase of the procedure, the one related to the degree, in 2022 5,200 people were recognized compared to the negative figures of the year 2018 where the Canary Islands decreased by 31 people.

Regarding the PIA, the Canary Islands has gone from 2,283 people served in 2018 to 7,911 in 2022 and from 2,390 services in 2018 to 9,919 in 2022, four times more than in 2018.

The counselor assures that the purpose for 2023 is “to maintain the rate of people cared for, to recognize the right that has been so unfairly taken away from dependent people for so many years.”

However, he points out that “there is still a long way to go” but he understands that “thanks to the enormous effort of the staff of the General Directorate for Dependency and Disability, very satisfactory results are being achieved.”
