La Laguna wants to make visible and value the wealth of its Mudejar art heritage through a few days organized by the City Council and the International Center for Heritage Conservation (icop) for training and dissemination of Mudejar art, dedicated to the conservation and restoration of lasso coffered ceilings, which will take place between the 19th and 21st of this month, at the Museum of History and Anthropology of Tenerife, and will feature important experts.
This was announced yesterday by the Councilor for Historical Heritage of the City Council, Elvira Jorge; the president of the Cicop Foundation, Francisco Aznar, and the honorary president of Cicop, Miguel Ángel Fernández Matrán.
“In these conferences we are going to go back to the 16th century, we are going to see white carpentry, a term that was coined to describe one of the four types of carpentry that existed until the 17th century, and we are going to do it through its bow artisans”, explained the councilor, who highlighted that in La Laguna “we preserve around 600 buildings of Mudejar architecture of Iberian origin”.
“La Laguna is one of the cities in the Canary Islands that stands out the most for its Mudejar art both in quantity and quality, variety and antiquity and it must be made visible. We have coffered ceilings from the 16th century, some of them are part of certain BICs”, the mayor assessed, highlighting those of the church of La Concepción or the Palacio de Nava, which is the one that most needs restoration, Matrán pointed out, and which he foresees attack the Canarian government.
Elvira Jorge pointed out that the objective of these conferences is “to raise awareness about the responsibility that public administrations have to continue conserving and promoting restoration work to continue transmitting this legacy”, as well as to learn about the work that is carried out in this area and, for Of course, “disseminate and make visible this very important legacy and increase its conservation and restoration.”
Meanwhile, the president of the Cicop Foundation pointed out that “the problem with coffered ceilings in the Canary Islands is that the masters who deal with white carpentry have disappeared.” Therefore, he stressed that “the intention of our Foundation has always been to take care not only of heritage, but also of those who have to take care of it”, and hence his desire to launch different training courses related to these trades.
For his part, Miguel Ángel Matrán indicated that these conferences represent “a wonderful opportunity to learn in depth the responsibility that La Laguna has as World Heritage in the dissemination and conservation of the legacy.” Likewise, he highlighted the intervention of Enrique Nuere, awarded the National Restoration Prize, nominated for the Baghdad and Aga Khan Prize for architecture, and the 2006 Cicop International Prize. In addition, Nuere was in charge of the restoration work on the coffered ceilings of the church from La Concepcion. Other experts such as Ángel Luis Candelas, Francisco Luis Martos, Ángel María Martín, Javier de Mingo and Ramón Cañil will also participate.
Registration is free, and it is essential, due to capacity limitations, to register on the official Cicop website.
