The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, following the agreement adopted at the Governing Board chaired by the mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, and held last Monday, urges the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge to urgent completion of works remodeling and expansion of the Industrial water treatment (EDAR) of Buenos Aires, so that the Consistory can comply with the technical conditions established in the Sea Discharge Authorization (AVM) of the Los Llanos Wastewater Treatment Station (ETAR).

José Manuel Bermúdez argued that “this is a very important action and consequences for the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which maintained the commitment to zero discharge on our coasts by the year 2025.” Objective for which “it is clear that it is absolutely essential that the works in the WWTP of Buenos Aires are completed, which are considerably delayed and which receive wastewater from three municipalities, including La Laguna and El Rosario, with which its capacity , which was already limited from the beginning of its commissioning, is even more so now, despite the improvement in its sieves”, the mayor emphasized in this regard.

For his part, the Councilor for Public Services and the Environment of the Consistory, Carlos Tarife, stated that “this City Council is investing in the solution of zero discharges and we have unlocked the investment with respect to Emmasa, so these works are going to be execute between this year and the next, so we demand that the Government of the Canary Islands be understanding of the situation in Santa Cruz ”.

To which he added that, “once all these wastewater discharges are resolved, Santa Cruz will even be able to recover the blue flags for its coast, something that has not happened since 2003.” Likewise, in the event that the works continue to suffer delays in their completion, said Ministry is urged, according to the agreement of the Board, to adopt the measures it deems appropriate, in order to guarantee the due legal coverage of the discharges of wastewater that is currently carried out in the WWTP of Los Llanos.

In addition, the City Council urges the Department of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands to modify the AVM of Los Llanos, adapting its technical conditions to the actual dates of execution of the remodeling works and extension of the WWTP of Buenos Aires executed by the Ministry.
