SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 10 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife has organized a public event this Tuesday to show its rejection of the murder due to gender violence that occurred last Sunday night in the municipality of Adeje.

The event, held at the main gate of the Island Palace, was chaired by Pedro Martín, Island President, and the Third Vice President and Minister of Social Action, Marián Franquet, together with representatives of the political groups and staff of the Cabildo.

Pedro Martín regretted that “it had to start in the Cabildo with one of the first public acts with this terrible event, due to sexist violence” and recalled that it was agreed at the time in an insular plenary session that they were not going to hold minutes of silence, “but of noise, to make a cry against circumstances such as those that are being condemned today.”

Marián Franquet expressed her rejection, weariness and pain at this murder and regretted that there are still people who deny gender violence and who encourage denialist discourse.

Franquet said that “the official figures speak of 49 women murdered in 2022 by their partners and ex-partners in this country” and has wondered “what would happen if in one year 49 men had been murdered at the hands of their wives or ex-wives, what would happen if in one day four men would have been murdered by their wives or ex-wives”.

In her opinion, “if we are capable of doing this role reversal, we will be able to understand what is happening to women.”

For Marián Franquet, “the denialist discourse feeds machismo and causes deaths of women, that is why we have to close ranks, because we cannot continue feeding machismo by denying what is evident.”

Along these lines, he insisted that “gender violence is a reality, it has a name and surname, and today it has a name and surname and four orphaned children” and recalled that the act on Tuesday is to express the “revulsion and indignation” of the corporation “and make it clear” that they are not willing “to continue tolerating machismo and gender violence”.
