The representation of the Unión Sindical Obrera (USO) in Titsa warns of the situation experienced every day by the drivers of the buses that serve the different lines of the South region. The union affirms that situations such as “suspended lines, continuous delays, full buses that do not stop at stops and excessively wide frequency of passage”among other issues.
These circumstances “have been taking place for a long time”, but “they have been aggravated by the discounts and free transport”, USO assures in its public complaint. Something that its union section and works committee in the company attributes to “poor organization and lack of resources on the part of the Cabildo de Tenerife and the Titsa company.”
The union – not the majority in the works council of the public company – maintains that “drivers who provide services in the South are suffering from excessive and, in some cases, unbearable workloads.” The consequence of all this for Titsa workers is reflected in “numerous situations of stress and sick leave”.
The situation has worsened with discounts and free transport
Aware of the discomfort among users of the public bus transport service in the South region, USO conveys to passengers its request that they “not download” the effects of “all service problems” with the drivers, since these are only dedicated to conducting and doing it in the best possible way with the tools that are made available to them, but they are not the ones who manage the service or the resources for it”.
The union concludes: “We fully reject the verbal attacks that drivers have been suffering for the poor service that is provided.” At the same time, he demands “the politician on duty” to assume responsibility for him, taking into account that these are not specific situations, “users know that these occur one day and another too.”
It should be remembered that the Cabildo announced the purchase of 250 buseswith 95 million investment, for the company Titsa and that will receive them during the years 2024 and 2025. The insular Government explained that more than half of the investment will correspond to buses to be used for the interurban service, as they are the routes that register a greater increase in demand on the island. In particular, the southern region.
110 million in sustainable mobility
In this line, the president of the Cabildo Pedro Martín, stressed that the item that the Institution will use in this operation is “necessary.” In his opinion, “the situation of public transportation on the Island demands it.” In fact, he recalled that the 2023 budget devotes special attention “to sustainable mobility, with significant financing for public transport of more than 110 million euros”. He stressed that, “in terms of Mobility, 101 million euros of the 2023 budget will go to subsidies for public transport and, in addition, it is expected to acquire 40 new buses, which will be added to the 130 that will arrive over the next year (for this 2023)”.
Titsa will receive 146 buses during the 2024 financial year, among which there will be 24 interurban vehicles of 15 meters, 70 of 13 meters, 27 of 11 meters and 14 of 18 meter articulated vehicles. In addition, this lot will have 10 minibuses and a long-distance bus, 12 meters long. The order will be completed in 2025, when the company will have another 20 interurban vehicles of 15 meters, 55 of 13 meters, 21 of 11 meters and eight minibuses.
