“Another victim of the fun of a few that prevails over the well-being and health of the rest. This is what pyrotechnics brings. How sad.”
The noise of firecrackers, so common on days like New Year’s Eve, is a nightmare for dogs, who feel them as if they were real bombs. It is not something new, it has been denounced on too many occasions and campaigns have been carried out to collect signatures to prevent the proliferation of fireworks or so that the fireworks have a lower sound impact.
Cristo Gil had denounced the death of another dog last Monday: Leyko, 16 years old. He also did it from his Instagram profile where he wrote: “Yesterday he jumped from a third floor and died.” “He was terrified of fireworks, the one you throw, the one you have fun with. Remember his face when you go to throw a firecracker next time,” he said. “You never know when he’s going to touch you, until he touches you,” he warned.
He also recalled that was the way in which “This poor family began the year, which also got involved with the collection of signatures.”
Last November, PACMA managed to collect some 17,500 signatures to request the regulation of fireworks in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. More than 140 companies, murgas, comparsas, animal protection entities, activists and individuals joined this petition.
“Countless animals die, get sick and go astray from the noise of the firecrackers, and the elderly and highly sensitive people often have to flee or find a way to abstract themselves because the city turns into chaos”explained Gil during the campaign to collect signatures.
Given this action, the mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and the councilor Alfonso Cabello committed themselves to a pyrotechnic display with low sound impact and lasting 15 minutes on December 31. However, in a video that he himself has uploaded to his social networks, it was not enough.
