The Villa of La Orotava prepares to beat his own record, established in 2020, on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, and to elaborate a huge roscón de Reyes of more than 500 meters in length. If they exceed 550 meters, they will also overtake the Villa de Moya, in Gran Canaria, which on December 17, 2022 announced that it had broken the record in Spain. To make it, the Manobuena pastry shop produces more than 1,000 kilos of pastry cream filling and Jovita Bakery He is in charge of making the dough for this sweet with more than 240 kilos of flour; 18 kilos of fresh yeast; 14 liters of white and 5 liters of egg yolk; 10 liters of orange juice; more than 150 kilos of candied and candied fruit, 50 kilos of orange, and many other ingredients such as margarine, cinnamon, sugar, vanilla or lemon. To accompany the portions, it will also be distributed about 450 liters of hot chocolate.

The tradition of the giant roscón de Reyes turns 11 in La Orotava and returns without restrictions after two years marked by the Covid-19 pandemic. This gastronomic and solidarity festival will take place in Emilio Luque avenue, next to the main access to La Milagrosa school. As in previous years, the portions will be distributed in exchange for a donation that will benefit Spanish Red Cross. Entity that plans to allocate the proceeds to the most needy families in this northern municipality.

The Manobuena pastry shop will be in charge of making the more than 1,000 kilos of pastry cream for the filling of the great Roscón de Reyes. A work that they have developed in the last 11 years.

Although the previous work lasts days, the public exhibition and consumption of the roscón de Reyes will begin from 5:30 p.m.. The initial forecast is that the act last until 9:00 p.m.but last year’s experience invites us to think that the sweet can run out even before those three and a half hours provided. In the last edition, the candy was already sold out in three and a half hours, enough time to distribute 1,192 boxes containing portions about 12 centimeters wide. The 2022 edition was a smaller edition, since the usual thing before the pandemic is that some 6,000 people attended the event and around 4,000 portions were distributed.

To overcome the current regional and national record, achieved by Moya, La Orotava will have to exceed 550 meters of roscón

In this 2023 we want to recover all the splendor of this act, organized by the Local Economic Development area, which energizes the campaign of Kings in La Orotava also with animation and music. The Town Hall asks attendees for patience and collaboration, as long queues can form in search of a piece of this roscón and a glass of hot chocolate. However, this wait could have a reward, since in the portions you can find surprises and gifts, donated by shops of the orotava. The luckiest participants must go through the stores indicated in the prize to be able to withdraw it that day or at a later date.

Roscón de Reyes from La Orotava The day

The Town Hall hopes that this year’s roscón de Reyes will be the largest in the Canary Islands and the largest in Spain. To make it, will have to overcome the 550 meters of the sweet made last December 17 in Villa de Moya, in Gran Canaria, which presented the largest roscón in the country thanks to its 1,597 kilos and 5,150 portions. The town in Gran Canaria thus surpassed the record it had since January 2010 the Murcian town of Lorcawho then made a roscón of 363 meters and 1,467 kilos of weight.

Still far from Guinness

the orotava On Wednesday, January 4, he will break his own record for the length of the Roscón de Reyes and may challenge Moya for the national record, but he will still be far from Guinness. The Mexican city of Tiziminin the state of Yucatán, produced in 2020 a sweet of 3,009 meterswhich surpassed the mark achieved a year earlier by another town in Mexico, Saltillo, which had made a roscón de 2,065 meters. In turn, Saltillo surpassed a Swiss roscón that in 2011 reached 973 meters.

The list of ingredients of the biggest roscón de Reyes in the world, the elaborate in Mexico in 2020scares: there were 2,600 kilos of flour, 12,500 eggs, 625 kilos of sugar, 625 liters of milk, 50 kilos of salt and 50 kilos of yeast.
