The senior centers of Las Galletas, Buzanada, Guargacho, Las Rosas and Parque de La Reina reopen after being closed since almost the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The measure occurs after the appointment of Ruth Lorenzo as councilor for the area of the elderly, highlights the municipal government. Those located in El Fraile, Valle San Lorenzo, Cabo Blanco, the town of Arona, La Camella and Los Cristianos had already resumed their activity.
The government led by José Julián Mena attributes this improvement “to the last social program of job launched in Arona on December 16, with 73 workers out of the 116 that make up the Arona Social Employment Program 2022-2023”. With this, the total number of unemployed who have participated in any of them in the municipality during 2022 exceeds 320.
The Arona Social Employment Program 2022-2023 is highly oriented towards strengthening areas such as Social Services and the Elderly. “This fact is what has made it possible to reopen closed centers, in addition to reinforcing services such as home help, which now has seven more workers, or aid processing, which now has another eight administrative assistants” , maintains the municipal government.
The mayor, José Julián Mena, stresses that “it was essential to reopen the five centers that were closed, both due to the needs of the elderly and their families, who had been waiting for too long and asking for a solution to this situation.” Mena appreciates “the enormous effort made by the staff, both from Social Services and the Elderly, who have been faced with a very complex situation at a difficult time and who have known how to maintain the services and support users with the utmost professionalism.”
Councilor Ruth Lorenzo explains that “the elderly are a vulnerable group, who need meeting places and activities in which to maintain activity and, therefore, opening these centers as a public service was key, in the same way that they are home help or the processing of public aid”.
