Los Silos-Isla Baja asks for support to continue with the complaint against the spills

The platform Los Silos-Isla Baja makes an appeal to the public to be able to continue in the courts of justice their complaint against the wastewater discharges on the coast of the region.

To continue with this process, it asks the residents to contribute a financial contribution (the account number can be found on their social networks) to be able to cover the legal expenses derived from the administrative dispute already initiated against the three parties involved in the acceptance and signing of the discharge agreement last year, in order to transfer wastewater from Garachico to Los Silos through the existing submarine outfall in the latter municipality.

“This agreement was sold as a solution and, however, it is the opposite, because, in addition, Los Silos has to pay a cost of 33,410 euros per year for the maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Station, in addition to suffering the direct damage to its coast, fishing and economic activity and leisure ”, they criticize from the platform.

The group, which has been mobilizing since 2017 against the regional sanitation and purification project proposed by the Cabildo, insists that this infrastructure “deteriorates marine flora and fauna, harms the health of the population and limits economic development and the possibilities of leisure”. Moreover, he insists that it is not a problem that exclusively affects the Isla Baja, but the entire Canary Islands.

natural purification

On the contrary, the platform is committed to extensive or natural purification, as the only solution to “compensate” the transfer of wastewater from the neighboring municipality. In this sense, he considers that the Masca treatment plant is the natural and sustainable model that is pursued in Isla Baja and that it is applicable to any site. His arguments go through the fact that it is a cheaper, more effective system, more respectful of the environment and easy to install on the coast.

However, the City Council defends that this model is not a real alternative for Los Silos. The mayoress, Macarena Fuentes, points out that the signing of the agreement is supported by technical and legal criteria.
