Four dead in accidents during the Christmas weekend in the Canary Islands

Tragic weekend in the Canary Islands. at least four people have died in different accidents in Gran Canaria and Tenerife during the Christmas weekend, between traffic accidents and drownings, Two other people had to be rescued from the water when they were in trouble on the Lanzarote coast and a motorcyclist was seriously injured after suffering an accident with another motorcycle involved in Güímar.

The first of the accidents occurred at 11:05 p.m. on Friday in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. A woman died on the GC-23 highway, in the vicinity of the Vigía roundabout in the capital of Gran Canaria, according to the Emergency and Security Coordination Center (CECOES) 1-1-2 of the Government of the Canary Islands, which after receiving the alert activated personnel from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC). Upon reaching the place, he could only confirm the death of the woman. The Civil Guard and the Local Police of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria also intervened in the operation.

The second accident occurred four hours later, at 03:35 in the morning on Christmas Eve, on the island of Tenerife. The 1-1-2 received a call reporting a hit-and-run on the TF-1, the southern highway, in the direction of the capital, in the vicinity of the access to Los Cristianos, in the municipality of Arona. The victim was a 27-year-old young man who, when the emergency services arrived, was in cardiorespiratory arrest. At that time, the SUC staff performed advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers on him, without success, so they could only confirm his death. The emergency services also attended to the driver of the vehicle, according to the 1-1-2 of the Government of the Canary Islands.

The Civil Guard traveled to the place, which regulated traffic in the area and instructed the corresponding procedures, and a team from the Highway Conservation of the Cabildo de Tenerife that carried out cleaning tasks on the road.

The third incident occurred at 12:16 p.m. on Saturday, December 24, when a 29-year-old surfer lost his life after suffering an accident in the El Frontón area, on the Gáldar coast. The 1-1-2 received the alert call and sent the emergency resources, who, upon reaching the scene of the event, found the young man out of the water, as other surfers who were in the place had pulled him out until the shore towards the beach of Caleta de Arriba.

After verifying that he was in cardiorespiratory arrest, the Local Police, together with other people who were at the scene, performed a cardiac massage on the affected person following the instructions that a nurse coordinator of the SUC gave them via telecare from the operating room.

Once in the area, the health personnel verified that the young man was in cardiorespiratory arrest and continued to perform basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers without success, and could only confirm the death. Firefighters from the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium, the Civil Guard and a GES helicopter participated in the operation deployed in Gáldar.

The fourth accident with fatalities this weekend occurred yesterday Sunday on the beach of Puerto Rico, in Mogán, where a 74-year-old woman drowned. The event occurred at 3:19 p.m., when the lifeguard rescued the victim after seeing her floating in the water. The woman was in cardiorespiratory arrest and the lifeguard to practice resuscitation maneuvers with the help of a defibrillator.

Upon arrival, the SUC personnel verified that the woman was still in cardiorespiratory arrest and, together with personnel from the health center in the area and from a private resource that was in the place, they continued practicing advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers without obtaining results. confirming his death, as reported on 1-1-2.

In addition to these four accidents with fatalities, different events have been recorded on the islands during this Christmas weekend. A car overturned on Saturday morning at the southbound entrance to the Gran Canaria airport, the driver injured and trapped between the vehicle and the asphalt. Firefighters from the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium had to free the victim.

In Tenerife, also on Christmas Eve, a 44-year-old motorist was seriously injured after a traffic accident in Güímar. The accident, with two motorcycles involved, occurred at 12:00 in the vicinity of the Observatory, on the TF-24. Upon arrival of emergency resources and after being stabilized, one was transferred in serious condition by helicopter to the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Hospital and the other, with moderate injuries, to the same hospital.

Yesterday Christmas day, a 60-year-old woman was moderately injured after being run over on Barcelona street in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; and on the coast of Tías, in Lanzarote, two men aged 47 and 22 were rescued from the sea when they were in trouble on Los Pocillos beach. The first to reach them was a lifeguard who kept them afloat until the arrival of the emergency services.
