SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Dec. 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has demanded this Tuesday that the separation of powers be guaranteed and has appealed to “take care of democracy” after the paralysis of the reform of the Constitutional Court (TC) that is being processed in the Senate.

In statements to journalists, he acknowledged that Monday was “a sad day for democracy” after the good work that was done during the Transition and having managed to stop the 23-F coup.

He has also said that in the same way that no judge “can be told what to do,” no court “can say what should be legislated, in what sense and with what majorities” in a legislative Chamber.

Torres has indicated that the separation of powers is the “fundamental basis of free democracy” and although he abides by the TC’s decision, he is confident that society “is on the side of the separation of powers”, including the PP, giving as an example that if a progressive majority in the TC paralyzed a conservative law, “they would not admit it either, they would not agree”.

“Democracy is not the benefit of the parties, it is the defense of the general interest,” he commented.
