Energy cost savings and environmental commitment are the main reasons for joining the Adeje Verde energy community

Every day there are more citizens who want to do something constructive against climate change and are looking for more sustainable ways of generating and consuming energy. Being part of an energy community like Green Adeje It is a form of actively participate in the energy transition. More and more canaries are joining this type of community not only for environmental awareness, but also for financial savings. According to the latest data published by Eurostat, electricity in Spain has cost 60% more this month of August than in the same month last year. This has provoked the reaction of the citizens. This is also the case of Rita del Rosario González, who, together with her neighbors from her apartment building, has decided to join Adeje Verde. “I originally decided to join this energy community for environmental reasons, but now the economic relevance is also important,” she says. We spoke with Rita about the process of joining Adeje Verde, about the reasons for doing so and about the decision-making process.

A “simple” process with constant advice

González currently lives in the Miraverde neighborhood community. He found out about this energy community through the Adeje Town Hall and decided to join it in mid-2022. There are two ways to join the Adeje Verde energy community: as a consumer, connecting to the neighbors’ photovoltaic panels to consume surplus energy sustainable energy produced, or as a prosumer, who installs his own photovoltaic system to self-consume and share the surplus with the neighbors. “We chose to join as prosumers because it’s a 229-unit building and for us being prosumers is more viable.” She and her neighbors made the decision together at a homeowners meeting. When talking about the decision-making process, he highlights that thanks to the support of the Adeje Verde team, the process of becoming part of the energy community has been “very simple, with advice at all times and all the necessary explanations. First we decided to study the feasibility of the project and, once this study was done, we approved in an extraordinary meeting how we were going to finance it”.

One of the main obstacles that citizens encounter when installing their own photovoltaic system is the initial investment. However, says González, “there are many ways to finance them without making a large initial investment, you can study the different options that Adeje Verde offers you and choose the one that best suits your situation.”

Committed to a sustainable future

González also believes that this energy community brings many environmental and socioeconomic benefits to the municipality. What he likes most about being part of Adeje Verde is “the possibility of being part of an energy efficient community and contributing our bit to protect our environment.”

Every day there are more residents of the municipality who join Adeje Verde to save on the electricity bill and actively contribute to achieving a more sustainable future.
