SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Dec. 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canarian Institute of Agrarian Research (ICIA), organized a meeting this Friday at the Botanical Garden of Puerto de la Cruz to present the network project of agroecological farms in the Canary Islands ‘Lighthouse Estates’.

The day with agroecological agriculture had the participation of those responsible for the ten farms that have already joined this project — three from Tenerife, two from Fuerteventura and one from El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. — who had the opportunity to meet around a space for debate in which they shared their experiences and acquired new tools to face the difficulties that might arise.

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alicia Vanoostende, highlighted the importance of promoting this project in the Canary Islands, “since it will benefit not only consumers, responding to their expectations when purchasing a quality product , but also to the environment, since agroecological agriculture contributes greatly to protecting natural resources and biodiversity, as well as promoting adaptation and mitigation of climate change.”

For this reason, he stressed the need to hold this meeting, being a meeting point for the farms and helping to create a community in which farmers can share their knowledge, concerns, doubts, resources, in addition to establishing collaboration networks.

“The forum will also contribute to promoting the growth of this network of farms, with the aim of becoming a benchmark for production for the entire archipelago, serving as a ‘lighthouse’ and guide for other nearby farms,” he added.

The program began with the presentation of Mery Jaizme-Vega and Eduardo Rodríguez, in charge of launching this project, who will provide the bases and objectives of this initiative, as well as the methodology that is being applied.

In addition, they detailed all the training that the project contemplates, in line with the important informative and dissemination work to improve skills around this activity, make agroecology visible, sensitize and bring agroecology closer to the largest possible part of the farms on the islands.

Subsequently, the presentation of the ten farms that have already joined the network of agroecological farms in the Canary Islands, ‘Fincas Faro’, took place, with the participation of the farmers who are leading these initiatives.

After the break, the round table began, from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m., in which each of the participants had the opportunity to explain the main problems that affect them and how to deal with them, through the possible networks established between them. each of the projects.

With the presentation of the new web page of the project https://ecofaro.com/ the day ended.

MITIGATE CLIMATE CHANGE

The Canarian Institute for Agrarian Research (ICIA), an Autonomous Organization of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands and attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, leads this development and innovation project, which combines ancestral and scientific knowledge with the new technologies for the promotion and diffusion of agroecology.

Red de Fincas Faro de Canarias began to take its first steps in the month of October, motivated by the commitment of the regional Executive to promote and strengthen an agroecological vision of agriculture.

It pursues the double objective of responding to consumer expectations of a high-quality product, while at the same time providing greater protection for the environment, helping to mitigate climate change.
