SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Dec. 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands has granted a total of 2.4 million euros in direct aid to compensate for the income losses suffered by the owners of farms other than bananas as a result of the volcanic eruption and contribute to the reconstruction of the sector on the island. Specifically, 1,384 producers from La Palma will benefit from these subsidies.

The subsidies will be paid in the coming days to the owners of farms associated with organizations of fruit and vegetable producers, as well as other agricultural associative entities, with advance payments made for the amount corresponding to the assessment of loss of income made by the Agroseguro entity.

The eruption that occurred on September 19, 2021 in the Cumbre Vieja area, in the municipality of El Paso, has generated serious devastating effects both in the affected areas and on the island in general, mainly in the towns of El Paso, The Llanos de Aridane and Tazacorte, destroying a diversity of crops and farms, and leaving a large part of the palm population without income, and among the affected tropical and subtropical crops, proteas, which are the object of this aid.

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alicia Vanoostende, explained that, in this way, “the Canary Islands Government contributes to continuing with the path of recovery of the primary sector in La Palma and, on this occasion, of crops as essential as avocado, mangoes, papaya, citrus and other fruit trees and vegetables”.

“We are aware of the difficult situation that agriculture is going through on La Palma, which has had to suffer the consequences of a devastating fire in the last year, to which the virulence of the volcano, whose eruption occurred just one month later, has been added. than the fire, so we will continue promoting measures that support the important work of producers to take steps towards the reconstruction and strength of the sector,” he said.
