In addition to being “fundamental”, the government group understands that coastal management “is one of the most valued services, both by residents and tourists who visit our coasts year after year.” This appreciation is based on “the numerous quality distinctions received” as a result of this work. In the list they cite the blue flags, which give an account of the quality of the beaches of Arona, and the Aenor flag of Universal Accessibility (UNE 170001-2: 2007) of Las Vistas, «unique in the Canary Islands».

One of the great improvements

From the bases established in the tender, one of the main improvements over the previous contract is the creation of a digital supervision system for the coastline. Through it, information will be offered for the understanding and monitoring of different coastal processes, in addition to facilitating, in real time and continuously, the density of users in Las Vistas and Los Cristianos, thus improving the management of the beaches and their resources. . With the implementation of this system, the information on meteorological conditions will also be strengthened and the main beaches of Arona will be equipped with a web camera system.

The concessionaire will be in charge of manage waste and clean the coastline, maintain the infrastructures, inspection tasks, the design and execution of communication and environmental awareness campaigns and implement digital technology for service management.

“Continuing to offer the highest quality on our beaches also affects our main economic engine, which is tourism”

José Julián Mena – Mayor of Arona

Other improvements in this new contract refer to the extension of benefits, with an afternoon service to provide maximum coverage in the largest possible time slot; mechanical screening on Las Vistas beach and on Los Cristianos beach, with two tractors and mechanical sieves; as well as a new shovel with a backhoe for maintenance work. In compliance with the commitment acquired with sustainability and the environment, all vehicles will have an efficient management system that allows the carbon footprint of the service to be assessed.

The mayor of Arona, José Julián Mena, highlights the improvements compared to the current contract, «A serious step in our commitment to the management of our coastline, which significantly influences issues as important as the environment and sustainability. Continuing to offer the highest quality on our beaches also affects our main economic engine, which is tourism ».

More human resources

The Councilor for the Environment and Sustainability, Leopoldo Díaz Oda, highlights that the new contract “is an important commitment for this City Council.” “We expand human and material resources, reinforce the cleanliness of our beaches and the efficiency of our services, which has a direct impact on improving the quality of our coastline.”
