SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Dec. 7 (EUROPA PRESS) –
A project of the Cabildo de Tenerife, carried out through the Employment Program for the Ecological Transition 2021 (PETE), has carried out maintenance, analysis and inventory of infrastructures and forest ecosystems in the Protected Natural Areas of the Island of Tenerife with in order to plan mitigation and adaptation actions to climate change.
“This project has been able to be carried out by having, in the Natural Environment area, five people who were unemployed and registered as applicants for different professional classes and academic qualifications, and who were hired for nine months”, has indicated the Minister of Natural Environment and Security Management, Isabel García, who added that this work “provides fundamental data that will serve the area to plan actions and works in the medium and long term, as well as to know the real state of the pine stands canary of the mountains”.
Among these actions, forestry treatments stand out where competition from invasive and pyrrophytic species has been eliminated, those that are capable of withstanding fires, on repopulations of Monteverde in an area of 24,827 square meters, benefiting native species characteristic of this plant formation.
Likewise, the current state of certain forest tracks has been reviewed, georeferencing the main elements as well as the damage to the tracks for the best management of their maintenance as well as the data collection of a ‘Canary Pine Provenance Trial’, in which data have been taken from a total of 1,680 trees from 21 populations of Canary Island pine.
With the data collected, the differences in behavior between the different provenances of this species will be studied, collects a note from the Cabildo.
Other works carried out within the framework of this program have been support for the maintenance and inventory of the network of barriers on forest tracks, and the hydraulic network for the prevention and extinction of forest fires.
The personnel costs of this program have been 100% subsidized by the Canary Islands Employment Service (SCE), financed from funds received from the Public State Employment Service (SEPE), through the Comprehensive Employment Plan of the Canary Islands.
