SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Dec. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife, through the public company Balsas de Tenerife (Balten), will begin repair work on the largest reclaimed water pipe on the island in mid-December.

The works, which have a budget of 1.4 million euros, will be carried out by the company Tedagua and have a completion period of 12 months.

The insular Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, explains in a note that “the so-called black tube of Balten is a fundamental infrastructure to guarantee the supply of irrigation water to the south of the island, which is essential, turn, for the hydraulic balance of the island”.

In this sense, he recalls that in these three years they have had to “solve breakdowns and accidents that have jeopardized irrigation in the south of the island, such as the one that occurred on August 5, 2019”, and this situation could not be maintained “due to more time”.

The works include the repair and improvement of the reclaimed water pipeline between the pumping station located under the Buenos Aires WWTP, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, to the Valle San Lorenzo reservoir, in Arona, which consists of a first section of 6.63-kilometer pipeline that carries the water to a reservoir located in El Tablero, with a capacity of 15,000 cubic meters.

Starting from El Tablero, the 62.22-kilometer-long transport pipeline itself develops, which runs practically parallel to the Autopista del Sur to the Valle de San Lorenzo pond, with a capacity of 250,000 cubic meters.

Through this action, the passage works, manholes and other structural elements will also be improved. In the same way, valve elements will be replaced, the anchors will be reinforced and new control devices will be installed.

“All this with the aim of preserving this strategic facility, a pioneer in the Canary Islands and which in 2023 will celebrate thirty years of service,” Parrilla abounds.

The island manager recalls that, at the beginning of 2020, by virtue of the principle of prevention, the Cabildo determined to carry out a complete inspection of this system and the proposal of actions to improve its guarantee of maintenance and conservation.

In this regard, Parrilla recalls that at the beginning of the year the maintenance contract for all the water pipes (including this one) was awarded and that all the services of this contract have been optimized from the perspective of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). of the 2030 Agenda, demanding an express commitment from bidders and incorporating environmental criteria transversally.
