SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 30 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, presented the San Andrés 2022 Award today, Wednesday, to Felipe Monje, head of Bodegas Monje, in a ceremony held at the Casa del Vino in El Sauzal to commemorate the traditional corkage day with the sector island winegrower.
The event was attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alicia Vanoostende; the Island Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, as well as representatives of the Island Corporation and the municipalities of La Laguna, La Victoria, El Sauzal, Tacoronte and Vilaflor.
Pedro Martín highlighted the career of Felipe Monje, who belongs to the fifth generation of this family, a saga that has transmitted his passion for viticulture since 1750. In this sense, he valued his work in the world of oenology and its pioneering commitment to wine tourism, “hosting cultural, gastronomic and leisure initiatives that expand the boundaries of wine and allow you to enjoy unforgettable experiences”.
Martín referred to the importance of the primary sector on the Island, not only for sustaining economic activity and employment, but also for its contribution to the conservation of the landscape, culture, and traditions; “Inherent values of this winery and that define the years of work of Felipe Monje”, he added.
The island president also thanked the efforts of the first six wineries that registered in the Denominations of Origin of Tenerife, “which today are also protagonists in this act, for promoting the wine wealth of our island”.
Specifically, the wineries are the following: Viñátigo Winery (DO Ycoden-Daute-Isora), Regional Winery Valle de Güímar (DO Valle de Güímar), Regional Winery La Orotava (DO Valle de La Orotava), Bodega Arautava (DO Canary Islands ), Bodegas Cumbres de Abona (DO Abona) and Bodega Flores (DO Tacoronte-Acentejo).
Along these lines, Pedro Martín highlighted that the history of Tenerife “has always been linked to wine production, it is part of our identity, which is why the Cabildo will continue working to promote and publicize our richness, diversity and uniqueness of winemaking, bringing the good work of our wineries to the most important fairs and congresses at a regional, national and international level”.
For his part, the insular Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, stressed that the work of Felipe Monje “goes beyond oenology, working for the positioning of viticulture and enogastrotourism, and generating new paths that others have already take as normal”.
In this regard, the island official wanted to recall that six Denominations of Origin operate in Tenerife and highlighted the importance of diversity in the union, “an issue that I have always heard Felipe Monje say and that I think clearly defines what Tenerife is.” “.
During the event there was a theatrical performance about the failed British battle, led by King George III, and his attempt to invade Tenerife to monopolize the island’s wine.
