SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov. 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife has paid a grant of 100,000 euros to feed the Canarian cow, a native breed of the islands, through a subsidy to the Canarian Association of Drag, Promotion and Breeding of Coarse Livestock and National Livestock Breeders Select Bovine of the Basta Breed of the Canary Islands (ACA).

The Island Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, pointed out that a total of 88 farmers on the island, owners of 90 farms, will benefit from this aid, which aims to finance the purchase of food for animals of this breed. , in order to contribute to its defense, protection and preservation.

“Therefore, it is about compensating for the losses derived from the Covid health crisis, the increase in the price of feed and electricity, reducing uncertainty and boosting the business confidence of our farmers”, Javier added. Grill.

The island official wanted to recall that most of the autochthonous breeds have been on the brink of extinction due to the arrival on the islands of highly productive foreign breeds, hence the importance of this aid, which seeks to help consolidate traditional breeds, in In this case, the Canarian cow, as key elements for the generation of economy on the island.

The island manager also valued the 30,000 euros earmarked for the preservation of the coarse cow and the Tenerife goat, which were urgently processed and whose objective was the development of genetic improvement, conservation and maintenance work on these breeds.

LIVESTOCK IN TENERIFE

Livestock activity in Tenerife has a long tradition, even before the conquest of the islands, although it has evolved based on the island’s economic model and market demands at each time.

The autochthonous cattle breeds are characterized by their resistance and rusticity, they are adapted to the insular environment and the climate of the islands, and they have a high resistance to diseases.

According to the Registry of Livestock Farms of the Canary Islands, today 111 livestock farms in Tenerife have animals of the Canarian bovine breed, with a total census of 856 heads.
