North Hospital, dependent on the University Hospital Complex of the Canary Islands, has incorporated major outpatient surgery to its portfolio of services by performing plastic surgery and dermatology, urology and ophthalmology interventions, as well as gynecology and general surgery.
This surgical unit, with a surface area of 780 m2, has two operating theatres, an outside and an inside waiting room, a medical consultation, ante-operating room, an awakening area, an area for adaptation to the environment, a storage area, a handwashing room, changing rooms for surgical staff and control and admission, among others. The investment made amounts to 1.3 million euros for the work and 759,757.98 for equipment, including instruments.
Also twenty-three professionals have been recruited, among nurses, supervisor, auxiliary nursing care technicians, orderlies, administrative assistant, cleaning workers and driver. On the other hand, the surgical and anesthesiology services have increased their resources to be able to respond to this initiative.
The manager, Mercedes Cueto, pointed out that “in this way the benefits are expanded, bringing the services closer to the population and avoiding the displacement to the HUC, which means a better quality of life for users in the northern area.” She also added that the opening of this Unit completes the portfolio of services offered by the Hospital del Norte with the area of Consultations, Hospitalization and Emergencies.
Major ambulatory surgery is the care modality in which patients return home the same day of the operation. Among the advantages it offers are freeing operating rooms and hospital beds for other patients with more serious illnesses, reducing the waiting time to be operated on and facilitating the return of the patient to his daily life thanks to the fact that recovery takes place in the family environment.

The North Hospital It has 49 functioning hospital beds, a Day Hospital, an Outpatient Pharmacy and an Emergency Service.
The operative external consultations in this hospital center are in the specialties of cardiology, pulmonology, neurology, dermatology, digestive system, endocrinology and nutrition, rehabilitation, general and digestive surgery, traumatology and orthopedics, gynecology and obstetrics, urology, otorhinolaryngology and audiometry, ophthalmology , hematology, nephrology, vascular surgery and rheumatology. Psychiatry is attended at the Icod Health Center. Blood draws are also performed.
The complementary tests that are carried out are spirometry, electrocardiography, remote control of pacemakers, audiometry, nasofibroscopy, diabetes education and nutrition, implanted reservoir lavage, simple radiology, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance, venous echo-doppler, echocardiography, point of blood extraction, minor ambulatory surgery, campimetry, pachymetry, ocular computed tomography (oct), retinography, high-resolution consultations with echo doppler, biological therapy for rheumatic inflammatory disease and holter for blood pressure control.
In 2021, the professionals of the Hospital del Norte attended a total of 9,699 emergencies, made 39,789 consultations and 425 admissions to the ward were carried out in its hospitalization area. In addition, 535 day hospital sessions, 6,735 ultrasounds, 9,145 CT and 3,695 magnetic resonances were carried out.
