The Councilor for Finance and Economic Resources and Citizen Security of La Laguna, Alejandro Marrero, number three on the PSOE list in the last elections, presented his resignation yesterday “for personal reasons”, after allegedly being involved in a traffic accident and leaving the vehicle, according to Canarias Ahora.

In a statement, the La Laguna City Council specifies that the resignation will become effective today, when it is presented in the City Council registry.

Apparently, an official vehicle that the mayor had been using months ago was left running and with its doors open after colliding with the wall of a plot of land in the Los Naranjeros area, in Tacoronte, in the early hours of last Saturday.

Inside the vehicle there was documentation from the Department of Citizen Security, for which Marrero is responsible, as well as a baby seat anchored to the rear.

Likewise, the Civil Traffic Guard located an individual wandering “in an apparent state of disorientation” along the shoulder of the highway, whom they identified. Then, he reported what happened to the Local Police of La Laguna.

As confirmed to DIARIO DE AVISOS by municipal sources, the mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, was yesterday outside the island returning from the meeting of Heritage Cities held in Cuba, so it will not be until today when he is expected to rule on Marrero’s resignation.

The damaged car, as this medium was able to learn, was regularly used by the mayor for official acts related to his position. In the specific case of this Saturday, he had an act in the morning and another in the afternoon, so it seems that he decided to keep the car for the whole day.

From the councilor’s environment, it is assured that Marrero does not remember anything after the accident, so, once he was informed of the state in which the car was left, on his own initiative, he decided to present his resignation.
The same sources indicate that he would have already started a medical consultation about the alleged memory lapses that he would have suffered previously.

The resignation of Marrero, which the City Council insisted on, has occurred on his own initiative, without prior consultation with the mayor, has surprised the political environment of La Laguna, especially due to its parallelism with another case, that of Blanca Pérez (CC), Councilor for Social Welfare in the last term, who suffered a traffic incident and did not resign.

At that time, the mayor made her position available to the then mayor, Fernando Clavijo, after being surprised by local police officers driving in the wrong direction and allegedly under the influence of alcohol on Los Menceyes avenue.

Socialist sources say that Marrero has decided to step aside due to an incident that is under investigation, while, in the case of the CC councilor, Clavijo limited himself to changing her area.
