SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov. 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Support and Palliative Care Service of the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital cares for 1,400 patients annually, with the aim of improving their quality of life and alleviating suffering, both physically and emotionally.

The data was released today, Wednesday, at the commemorative act of the 25th anniversary of the Service, where the professionals were thanked for their work at such a delicate moment for patients and their families, where the humane and multidisciplinary treatment of professionals is essential. sanitary.

Of the 1,400 patients treated annually, some 500 are admitted to the Ofra Hospital, a center dependent on the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria Hospital Complex, while the rest are treated with outpatient treatment.

A multidisciplinary team made up of doctors, nurses and assistants from different areas is involved in this task; It also has the support of psychologists and social workers from the psychosocial support team of the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation and the Red Cross, music therapy from the MAPFRE Guanarteme Foundation and the volunteer activities of the AECC and the Red Cross thanks to the agreements with the Canary Islands Health Service.

The Service has an area for external consultations, a hotline and telephone support, as well as a hospitalization unit. It also advises and helps Primary Care professionals so that patients who wish to continue their treatment at home are well cared for and do so without suffering. In these cases, periodic calls are made from the telephone service unit, to provide support and follow-up to both patients and relatives.

During the event, professionals from the support and palliative care service made reference to the advances available to improve the quality of life of people with very advanced diseases and terminal stages.

PALLIATIVE CARE STRATEGY.

Palliative Care in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands continues to be dynamically developed and updated in accordance with the SCS Palliative Care Strategy implemented on all the islands. This entails continuous actions to improve the professional resources available, training-updating activities, and development of new action protocols to assist people who require this care, both by the Primary Care and Hospital Care teams.

The actions carried out in the Canary Islands are in line with the organizations and care models that support and palliative care units have adopted internationally.
