SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Nov. 13 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo de Tenerife has awarded the first subsidies of the Corners of Biodiversity program, an initiative of the Natural Environment Management and Security area through which it is intended to contribute to renaturalizing desertified or abandoned spaces.

This first concession has awarded just over 67,000 euros, which have been distributed among the Terramare Recreational, Cultural and Sports Association, the Canarian Wildlife Association, the Group of Mountaineers of Tenerife and the Fundación Canaria el Buen Samaritano.

“We have launched this initiative, with the intention of perpetuating it over time and contributing, from the base of society, to recover abandoned or desertified spaces or to develop citizen science and volunteering and participation projects through which the environment can be benefited”, has indicated the councilor Isabel García.

The person in charge of the Natural Environment area added that there are many “spaces on the island, in addition to many very interesting small and specific projects, which need actions to start them up, and that is why we have designed this line of subsidies to take the first step to those small actions that will contribute to a more sustainable and friendly natural environment, which also create networks to guide the whole of society towards the protection of biodiversity as a source of health, education, social integration, creation of agroecological spaces, or treated urban spaces with comparable environmental and ecological criteria and oriented to the insular strategy of biodiversity”.

The Terramare Recreational, Cultural and Sports Association will benefit from 12,463 euros for a citizen science project to sample the different species of bats, in a large number of different municipalities and ecosystems under scientific procedure, while the Canarian Wildlife Association will work, with a help of 12,249 on the wetland of La Barca in Granadilla de Abona in which physical, biotic and abiotic components will be diagnosed, the place will be recovered environmentally and the conservation and reproduction of birds will be contributed and favored.

The Tenerife mountaineering group will receive 11,874 euros to carry out an action to control invasive plants in Mesa Mota, in addition to promoting the rehabilitation of this natural space with volunteer activities and promoting this space, highlighting its natural values ​​and involving citizens by carrying out recovery work of the environment and promoting informative initiatives; and the Fundación Canaria del Buen Samaritano, which benefits from 30,663 euros, will work on the recovery of the Barranco Urbano de Añaza, it is a land stewardship project located in Añaza, Santa Cruz, whose ultimate purpose is to raise awareness of caring for the environment, the use and enjoyment of nature, the importance of energy efficiency and recycling.
